Initial situation

Before treatment, strong odours were reported at the sludge beds. The facility received complaints from local residents; the site description also mentions repeated fines. The BIOFOX application aimed to eliminate odour from accumulated sludge at the site.

Actions taken

The sludge beds were treated with BIOFOX on 19 October 2022. The photographs show equipment preparation beside the tanks and solution application to the bed surface using a backpack sprayer. This application method brings the solution into contact with the treated surface layer.

Application results

The dealer reported that odours at the sludge beds were eliminated following treatment. For a facility where odour had prompted complaints, this operational outcome was the central result.

Why sludge management affects odour

The source: organic matter

Decomposition of organic matter in sludge can produce odorous compounds, including hydrogen sulphide, mercaptans, ammonia and volatile organic acids. Their composition depends on sludge properties and storage conditions; oxygen deficiency favours the formation of several reduced sulphur compounds.

Contact with the treated material

In this example, solution was applied to the sludge-bed surface. A biological treatment programme needs to account for sludge moisture and temperature, oxygen availability, layer depth and fresh organic inputs. These parameters define the conditions for the microbial formulation and inform the dosing programme.

From an outcome to a site programme

For a similar facility, we start with the sludge-bed questionnaire, assess the initial conditions and select an application method. Odour observations are considered alongside operating conditions; air measurements and sludge analyses can be added to the monitoring programme where needed.
